Summary of research interest and major achievements
I joined Indian Agricultural Research Service, (Ministry of Agriculture) in 1997 at Central Institute of Fisheries Education (Deemed University) and worked extensively on phyto-remediation techniques and heavy metal pollution.
Since 1999, I am working at National Research Centre for Weed Science, Jabalpur on various aspects of herbicides. I have been involved in monitoring of herbicides residues (in soil, crop produce at different stages, food grains, vegetables, fodder crops, water and fishes), their impact on animal and human health, studying the influence of biotic and physicochemical factors on herbicide efficacy and selectivity, influence of environmental factors on herbicide activity. I am also conducting work on ecotoxicological research studying the effects of herbicides on non-target organism (human health, soil microbes, earthworms, beneficial insects, fishes etc.) and succeeding crops. Weeds management by bioherbicides (allelochemicals) by isolation of natural chemicals from plants/weeds to control problematic weeds such as Parthenium histerophorus, Ipomoea, Ischaemum rogusum, Vicia sativa, Echinochloa colona, Convolvulus arvensis, Phaliris minor etc. I have isolated and identified many new triterpenoide molecules from plants by interpreting results obtained from various sophisticated spectrophotometry and chromatographic methods such as 1H NMR, 13 C NMR, IR spectrophotometer, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, TLC, HPLC, GC-MS-MS etc. which showed very strong growth inhibitory effect on several weeds such as Parthenium histerophorus, Ipomoea, Ischaemum rogusum, Vicia sativa, Echinochloa colona, Convolvulus arvensis, etc. even at concentration of 1%. This study revealed that triterpenoide molecules isolated from plants may serves as a potential template for preparation of new synthetically and herbicidal molecules for control of broad spectrum of weeds. ·Isolated allelochemicals from root exudates of some plants that can control Parthenium histerophorus, Ischaemum rogusum, Vicia sativa, Echinochloa colona, Convolvulus arvensis, phlariuis minor etc. control at 1 ppm to 10 ppm dose. ·I have developed various methods to analyze herbicide residues from different matrixes by Spectrophotometer, GC and HPLC. I have also developed various protocols to study the leaching behaviour of herbicides and risk of ground water pollution by herbicides.
